Naumburg Cathedral
The Naumburg Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul is one of the most important cultural monuments of the European High Middle Ages and is a magnet for visitors on the "Romanesque Road" in Saxony-Anhalt.
The works of art from Romanesque and Gothic, gathered in the cathedral, offer a special insight into the medieval liturgy and cultural history.
The greatest attraction is the work of the Naumburg master, an unknown architect and stone mason and sculptor.
Inspired by the Gothic cathedral architecture of France, he came to Naumburg in the middle of the 13th century and was responsible for the planning, furnishing and execution of the west choir.
The successful combination of architecture, sculpture and stained glass is unique in its kind. The reliefs on the Passion story on the west rood screen and the twelve life-size donor figures are particularly fascinating because of their incomparable realism and individual expressiveness. Above all, the donor figure Uta is able to cast a spell over thousands of visitors every year. It is considered a unique testimony of Gothic art and is the symbol of "the most beautiful woman of the Middle Ages".
